A drill should test the people, decisions and handoffs that matter during an outage—not only whether a document exists. Build scenarios that reflect your hospital’s actual dependencies and include both activation and recovery.

Drill checklist

1. Set a scenario: planned maintenance, network outage or cyber containment.
2. Choose departments, patient-safety priorities and success measures.
3. Brief observers and designate a clear incident command contact.
4. Test activation, access, documentation, handoffs and escalation.
5. Practice restoration and reconciliation—not just downtime operation.
6. Publish findings, owners and a deadline for improvements.
